Originally designed in 1898 Hartford architect Isaac A. Allen, Jr. followed the lead of H.H. Richardson in the Cheney Building and used a series of arcades to unify the facade of the Sage-Allen Building. Setting out to create a refined and elegant building, Mr. Allen used color, texture and flush windows to offset the ornately carved details of the building. The completed Sage-Allen building created an interesting contrast to the robust style of its neighboring Richardson building. Over the years the Sage-Allen building's facade has undergone multiple changes. This latest undertaking returns to a more thoughtful approach, creating elements to complement the existing and new architecture.
What is now known as Temple Street was changed from Theatre Street on October 5, 1824.
